Etta James Dead Aged 73, Music World Mourns A Legend

Etta James, the soul legend whose unique voice graced such hits as 'Something's Got A Hold On Me', 'The Wallflower' and her biggest hit 'At Last', has died aged 73. She passed away from complications of leukaemia with her husband Artis and sons by her side, according to her manager Lupe De Leon.

She was diagnosed with the disease in 2010 but also suffered from dementia and hepatitis C. Etta finally passed away at a hospital in Riverside, California, this week, just days before her 74th birthday. Speaking about the loss, De Leon said, "This is a tremendous loss for the family, her friends and fans around the world. She was a true original who could sing it all -- her music defied category.I worked with Etta for over 30 years. She was my friend and I will miss her always". The singer enjoyed a long and distinguished career in the music business but having battled cancer for several years, her doctor Elaine James confirmed to the New York Times that she was terminally ill last year, saying, "I am Southern and Christian and would just ask for the prayers of her fans and friends they know she's been sick, but not how sick".

Etta James was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame in 1993 and the Blues Hall of Fame in 2001. Rolling Stone magazine ranked her a No. 22 on their list of the 100 Greatest Singers of All Time and No. 62 on their list of the 100 Greatest Artists.
