Texan Amateur Wins Van Cliburn Foundation's International Piano Competition
A Texas physician has been named winner of the Van Cliburn Foundation's International Piano Competition for Outstanding Amateurs by competition organizers.
Seventy competitors from around the world who began the week-long competition at the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex were narrowed down to 25 semifinalists and then six finalists, a foundation release said Monday.
The jury declared physician Christopher Shih of Ellicott City, Md., the overall winner. In addition to $2,000 cash, Shih received tickets and official guest status for the 14th Van Cliburn International Piano Competition to be held in 2013.
Second prize went to retired database programmer Clark Griffin of Fort Worth, Texas.
The other finalists were family physical Barry Coutinho of Pittsburgh, retired hospital administrator Leslie Myrick of Toronto, Ontario, David Hibbard, a retired railroad manager from Fort Worth, and homemaker Jane Gibson King of Provo, Utah.
The International Piano Competition for Outstanding Amateurs was established in 1999, in what The Boston Globe called "a celebration of music, and the people who have to make music, no matter what."
In a first, all performances and awards ceremonies for the 2011 competition were streamed live over the Internet.
