James Franco launches music career

Franco has teamed with performance artist Kalup Linzy for the two-song EP titled Turn It Up.
Billing themselves as Kalup & Franco, the duo reportedly first met in December 2009 at Art Basel Miami Beach, and have since collaborated on a number of projects spanning film, music and live performance — including a drag performance of Proud Mary at a Campari party in New York last month. Linzy also did a cameo on General Hospital at the same time as Franco, reportedly on the actor’s urging.
As for their musical output, Linzy discussed the project with New York magazine in late January. According to the magazine, the duo’s recordings in progress included “would-be ballads, ambient New Age-y
crescendos, and layered electro-pop beats.” Linzy also gave the mag a preview of a track meant to evoke the classic track, Papa Was a Rolling Stone. “James is really into the old Motown sound,” he said.

The EP will be released digitally and as a limited-edition 7-inch, Pitchfork reports — and in keeping with the Kalup and Franco Facebook page’s mantra of “Where dreams, art, music, films, soap operas, real life, and performance art collide,” each of their songs will get a music-video treatment. As per Pitchfork, these clips will feature “surprise guest cameos.”

The duo’s posted a few song snippets on their Facebook page.
